Translation Strategies of Internet Neologism in Chinese Social Media Red Note

Abstract


Neologism refers to lexical items that introduce new forms or meanings not previously included in an existing vocabulary system (Xiong, 2006). These expressions often reflect current events and social changes and enter everyday communication. The appearance of neologism enriches modern Chinese vocabulary. Many scholars have examined the translation study of neologism. And translating them has become an important topic in telling Chinese stories well. However, translators often face challenges because neologism have distinct characteristics, unique cultural connotations and profound meaning. These features make accurate translation into English difficult and often lead to inappropriate or even incorrect translations (Qiu, 2014). This research focuses on the internet neologisms in the social media Red Note. And analyze translation strategies of them in machine translation and find out typical translation problems. Then refer to corpus COCA to compare different translations and analyze translation strategies of them. Therefore, this research has guiding significance to neologism translation practice and summarize more accurate translation.
