The Latin American and Caribbean Transition Toward a Green Economy: The Role of Nuclear Energy in Electricity Generation

Jorge Morales Pedraza

Abstract

A reliable energy supply is indispensable to ensure a country's development. Therefore, a country cannot grow if its electricity-generating system cannot provide the needed power economically, on demand, and in the amounts required.

Before a country can expand its electricity-generating system, its government and national energy industry must conduct comprehensive energy assessments of all available options to identify those that can be used economically, on demand, and without harming the environment, and that align with the country's energy mix. For several Latin American and Caribbean countries, nuclear energy is one of these options.
