Narratives of Loss and Becoming: A Theoretical Inquiry into Character Evolution in Contemporary Indian Literature

Abstract

Chetan Bhagat is a prominent writer in the firmament of Indian contemporary literature, connecting with the youth with full fingers, with his writing gripping and getting into readers' minds. His novels struggle to understand grief, growth, and hope in all forms, as is every layer of modern Indian society. This article explores the emotional landscapes in that Bhagat examines how his characters navigate personal and collective experiences of loss while striving for self-discovery and resilience. This article analyzes the select novels of Bhagat through a critical lens to argue that grief, as a transformative force, unites the people divided by the grief. Bhagat indulges in internal growth, which discusses how we must deal with our fears and change. Personal growth typically comes only through upheavals. This study includes psychoanalytic theory to understand better the psychological and cultural forces acting on Bhagat's characters. The ultimate point is to demonstrate Bhagat's importance to current literature in general, and to invite readers into grappling with their histories of grief and hope in a complicated world.
